Girl, 5, found dead in pool

By Nalinee Seelal Tuesday, June 3 2014

A five-year-old pre-school student drowned at the YMCA pool in Woodbrook yesterday while attending swimming classes with 16 classmates.

According to police reports, Jomilah Agard, a student of Sharon’s Pre-school, Murray Street, Woodbrook and her classmates were taken to the pool by teacher Euralia Thomas at about 9 am.

Swimming instructors, Brent Pena, Ricardo Frederick and Jamel Williams, conducted classes with the children and the session ended at 10 am. The children then left to take a bath and change into dry clothes when Thomas discovered Jomilah, of 12 Rose Hill, East Dry River, Port-of- Spain, was missing. She raised an alarm and informed the swimming instructors.

Pena went to the south-western side on the deep end of the pool where he saw Jomilah at the bottom. He plucked the child from the pool and began CPR.

EHS personnel were also called and they too administered CPR before taking Jomilah to Port-of- Spain General Hospital where she was attended to by Dr Saif Khan. It was during emergency treatment that Jomilah breathed her last breath shortly after 11 am.

Her mother, Jamila Forde, was contacted and told of her death.

A report was made to the Central Police Station and Inspector Joseph Chandool and Cpl Maharaj visited the YMCA facility to conduct enquiries.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on Jomilah today.
