FIRE officers had to used the hydraulic cutting device commonly known as the “jaws of life” to free the body of a 34-year-old Cascade man from the mangled wreck of his vehicle after it crashed into a wall near President’s Grounds shortly after 3 am yesterday.

According to a police report, Christian Dookie of Cascade Road, Cascade, who was the husband of Newsday advertising executive Brenda Pakeerah, was driving his black Ford Ranger vehicle east along the Queen’s Park Savannah, when on reaching the vicinity of President’s Grounds, the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a wall.

Dookie, who was an avid cyclist and angler, reportedly died on the spot. Eyewitnesses alerted the Belmont Police and officers of the Belmont Fire Station also responded. Fire officers used the “jaws of life” to cut through the mangled wreck of the van to reach Dookie’s body.

The District Medical Officer Dr Pounder subsequently arrived and declared Dookie dead. The body was removed to the Port-of-Spain Mortuary for autopsy.

The death of Dookie pushes the country’s road fatality toll to 67 for this year. His death came some months after another cycling enthusiast Clinton Grant was also killed in an accident.

For the same period last year, 79 persons were killed in road accidents.
