Friday, June 13 2014
The MELON-HEADED whale which was found stranded on Tuesday on the shores at Mayaro was put to rest.
After the whale was assisted back into deeper waters it returned to shore near Ortoire.
Numerous attempts by local fishermen to carry the whale into the sea failed as it kept returning to the shore. Dr Phillip of UWI’s Veterinary School along with officials of ODPM Tunapuna made
every effort to save the
whale, but all attempts proved futile.
At 8 pm on Tuesday the whale was put to rest. The whale was found stranded on the shore between Ortoire Village and Mayaro beach on Tuesday morning by villagers. The Zoological Society in a release, reported that this was the fifth whale of this species to be stranded in Manzanilla/Mayaro in the last four years, despite it being a deep sea water mammal.
According to the release the mammal weighed 250 pounds and was about seven feet long.
After the whale was euthanised, tissue and blood samples were taken to be analysed at the labs of the Veterinary School.
Sgt Ramlakhan, PCs Hosein, Kallicharan and WPC Reifer of Mayaro police ensured all was safe during the night time rescue operation and eventual euthanising of the animal.
