PSWA: Get senior counsel for cops

By NALINEE SEELAL Saturday, June 14 2014

THE Police Social and Welfare Association (PSWA) is recommending to Government that an attorney of Senior Counsel (SC) status be appointed to assist any police officer who may be the subject of an investigation involving the Police Complaints Authority (PCA).

Yesterday, association secretary Ag Insp Michael Seales, himself a trained lawyer, said recent public comments criticising the police as well as statements by PCA Director Gillian Lucky was not making it easy for officers who put their lives on the line every day to serve the public.

He noted there is a feeling among the membership that the PCA is out to get police officers and this should not be the case. He said that he did some research and a similar body as the PCA exists in Jamaica and when that body is triggered, what obtains is that a SC is provided for officers who are the subject to any enquiry by the body similar to the PCA and that SC is paid for by the State.

Association president Insp Anand Ramesar noted that the information from the membership is that the manner in which the PCA behaves including public discourse on issues affecting police officers has created a perception that the PCA is out to get the police which is adverse to what should have been the true purpose of the PCA.

“The Association is of the view that the PCA should adopt an approach that demonstrates neutrality and not one that is consistent with an organisation that is on the attack, whilst the Association supports transparency and efficiency in bringing a resolve to complaints against police officers from members of the public.
