PM: Fathers important to family life

Sunday, June 15 2014

The influence and contribution of adult males are of paramount importance to the holistic development and aspirations of the family unit and society in general, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said in her Father’s Day message.

Persad-Bissessar said the commitment to and practise of responsible actions by the father figure one crucial elements of success in the realisation of a young ward’s personal development. `“The father should be a mentor, protector, and a harbinger of peace both inside and outside the home. His good example is essential to the well-being of the family and, by extension, the entire community. It is not enough to give advice to a younger person when our actions do not reflect our words.

“We lead best by example and the impact of the example we choose to promote, whether conscious or unconscious; good or bad, is the legacy that will either haunt us or enrich or lives in the future.

“The time has come for the men in our society to be in the vanguard of renewal and progress by reclaiming their role and status as advisors, teachers, leaders and protectors,” said Persad-Bissessar in her message.

The prime minister said it was time that “our men, and boys who will soon be men, appreciate the importance of the reality that their charges look up to them for care and guidance during the critical years of their development.”

“It is your special influence that will encourage them to illuminate their lives by thought, word, and deed and improve their self-esteem and sense of self-worth,” she said.

Noting the many challenges of modern society brought about by new technologies and various influences, Persad-Bissessar said “fathers must reclaim their rightful positions of responsibility and leadership that our children expect from them.”

She called on all men in Trinidad and Tobago to be part of “National Conversation”, “to express fully their thoughts, hopes, dreams, concerns, and needs so that my Government may understand fully how best to channel the support that will ensure the well-being of you and your families.”
