SORROW: Relatives gaze at the tiny body of three-day-old baby Akilon Glasgow during a funeral service yesterday at the Elite Funeral Chapel in Point F...

THE DEATH of three-day-old Akilon Glasgow may have been like a thief in the night to his parents, but according to Rev Glenn Forbes, Akilon’s brief life and sudden death were all part of a plan by God, “who makes no mistake.”

“We are dealing with a mystery regarding what took place with this baby. And many of us may not understand his death. But God knows best and His plans may be a mystery to us, but is known to Him,” Forbes said as he officiated at the funeral service at Elite Funeral Chapel in Point Fortin.

Baby Akilon died on Monday after he was sent home from the Point Fortin Health Centre with his mother Nekisha Henry who took him there when his skin began to turn yellow. An autopsy showed that the infant died from consolidation of the left lung and asphyxia secondary to aspiration.

Akilon was born at Point Fortin Area Hospital shortly after midnight on Saturday. He was the first child for Henry, 26, and her husband Akil Glasgow, 33.

When Akilon’s arms and chest began turning yellow on Monday his parents became worried. As the baby’s condition worsened they took him to the health centre where Henry was given a formula to feed baby Akilon as he was refusing his mother’s breast milk. The couple left the health centre and returned to their home at Sixth Street, Techier Village, Point Fortin.

Henry prepared the formula and fed Akilon and ensured he burped before putting him in the crib to sleep, Glasgow said. Two hours later, the baby was unresponsive. Akilon was pronounced dead at the Point Fortin Hospital.

“We don’t know about tomorrow. But God knows from end to beginning, we need to trust in Him. This baby lived for three days. The parents may question how could good come out of this. I cannot say but God knows and He has a plan,” Forbes said.

Forbes continued: “Out of this disappointment God is able to put many blessings in your life. So trust Him,” he advised.

The priest reminded mourners that we all have an expiry date known only by God. “The only sin that this baby had was being born into sin. But we are born into sin and shaped in iniquity.

“We all need to read the word and begin to apply it in our daily lives,” he said. Henry’s cousin Jade Nathaniel-Bowen encouraged relatives and Akilon’s parents to find strength in God. “Seek solace in the Almighty. Find your comfort during this difficult time in the Lord,” Nathaniel-Bowen told his relatives and other mourners. Henry was unconsolable throughout the service and had to be comforted as she gazed at her son as he lay in a tiny white casket. At the end of the service, baby Akilon was laid to rest at the Cap-de-Ville Public Cemetery.
