Eight police officers released

Monday, July 7 2014

EIGHT police officers from the Southern Division who were held for allegedly setting fire to a teenager at the Princes Town Police Station, last December, have been released from custody pending further investigations. The police officers, one of them a woman constable, were released from police custody on Saturday night.

Senior police officers confirmed that investigations would continue into the alleged incident.

Last December, 18-year-old Jamerson John filed a report, claiming he was stripped to his underpants and doused with methylated spirit (rubbing alcohol) and set on fire while at the Princes Town Police Station. At the time the teenager was detained for housebreaking and larceny in Moruga an accusation which he has steadfastly denied. John suffered burns to his hip, legs and genital area and had to seek medical treatment. Princes Town Police have since denied Johnís allegation and claimed John was accidentally burnt when he used methylated spirit to clean a wound.

John was hospitalised for burns to his legs and genital area.

Through his attorney Petronilla Basdeo, a report was subsequently made to the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) and following investigations, a file was forwarded to the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard SC. Officers of the Professional Standards Bureau received instructions from the DPP to detain the officers. Investigations continue.
