Mediation talks today

By NALINEE SEELAL Tuesday, July 8 2014

PRESIDENT of the Public Services Association (PSA) Watson Duke yesterday agreed to meet with various stake holders in a bid to resolve issues affecting Immigration officers who have been on a work to rule for the past eight weeks.

Yesterday, at about 3 pm, Duke met with National Security Minister Gary Griffith to discuss ways and means of resolving the impasse. At the end of the hour-long meeting Duke agreed to a follow up meeting scheduled today for 10 am.

According to sources, Duke along with PSA representatives will meet with Chief Immigration Officer Gerry Downes, the Facilities Manager of the Ministry of National Security, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of National Security Carl Francis and representatives from the Ministry of Housing.

Contacted yesterday, Minister Griffith said, “Dialogue remains open and we are trying to deal with the matter.” He offered no further comment and said everything is being done in the interest of serving the public.

Sources said Immigration offices in Port-of-Spain, San Fernando and Chaguanas are to be housed at buildings deemed to be safe and OSHA compliant. Since June 14, members of the public have been turned away at Immigration offices after workers worked only specific hours during the morning period resulting in hundreds of persons not receiving their passports in time for the summer vacation and for other travel.
