Patient unable to get passport

Friday, July 18 2014

A WOMAN whose husband is due to travel to Columbia for medical treatment for his damaged arm which occurred during an industrial accident has been unable to leave the country due to not being able to get his passport.

The situation continues as staff at the Immigration divisions in Port-of-Spain and San Fernando continue to stay away from work citing unsafe working conditions .

The woman who did not want to reveal her name for fear of being victimised, recalled that she first went to the Port-of-Spain Immigration Office with an emergency letter, explaining her situation in hope that her matter would receive early attention. She was told to return two days ago. After returning, she was instructed to take her documents to the San Fernando Immigration office to be attended to. At the San Fernando office yesterday, an employee told her there was no staff at the office to see about her matters. She said she now has to re-schedule her flight which was carded for yesterday.

Meanwhile, another frustrated customer Jamel Haynes, 19, said he applied for his passport three months ago, and only has to collect it. He said he was not upset about it not being ready, but he complained about them still having his birth certificate which he needs to conduct other business.

The San Fernando Immigration Office has been operating on limited capacity for the past month, issuing only passports and application forms.
