Petition for Anil to be fired
Monday, July 28 2014
MORE than 400 people have signed an online petition calling for Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar to fire Anil Roberts as Sport Minister following the release of the Finance Ministry audit into the Life Sport programme, and also for the “ganja” video.
The petition is on the website change.org and is entitled “Petitioning Hon. Kamla Persad-Bissessar MP, SC — Prime Minister Trinidad and Tobago: Immediately revoke the ministerial portfolio of Anil Roberts”.
The petition cited the audit into LifeSport, a brainchild of Roberts, which “has unearthed massive corruption, millions of (dollars of) taxpayers’ money lost and laws of Trinidad and Tobago breached” and also the shock and disappointment expressed by the Prime Minister “that a programme that was intended to save lives, to build lives, was used by a group of people for fraud and personal gain”. Persad-Bissessar announced the termination of the programme on Friday in Parliament following receipt of the audit.
The petition also cited that the approval given by Cabinet was not strictly adhered to and there may have been breaches of the Proceeds of Crime Act.
“The citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago hereby demand that the Hon. Prime Minister immediately advise His Excellency the President Anthony Carmona to revoke the ministerial portfolio of Anil Roberts,” the petition stated.
A similar call for Roberts to be fired has been made by the People’s National Movement over the Life Sport audit. People’s Partnership coalition member, the Congress of the People, have called for Roberts to recuse himself from ministerial duties until the conclusion of investigations into Life Sport.
Roberts, however, said the report has not linked him to any corrupt activities and therefore he had no reason to resign. One poster on the petition called on Roberts to “just do what is right and necessary, if you really care about our democracy”.
