ASJA: Laws in place to deal with wife beating

Thursday, July 31 2014

PRESIDENT of the Anjuman Sunnat ul Jamaat Association (ASJA) Yacoob Ali yesterday said there are laws in place to deal with men who beat their wives. No citizen in the country should hit another one, he insisted.

“And I will have no further comment to make on that issue and that is not something you should perpetuate in the newspaper,” Ali told Newsday yesterday when contacted for a comment made by Imam Yaseen Fernandez during his Eid sermon in La Romaine.

On Tuesday, Fernandez called on the men who attended the Eid Salaat held on the grounds of the La Romaine High School, La Romaine to stop beating their wives. As an Imam, Fernandez said, he has had to deal with many reports of domestic violence in the household. He said the wives who complained of ill treatment often come to him in tears telling him of physical and verbal abuse from their husbands. During his sermon, Fernandez went on to say that such abusive men “are very nice” when they are away from home.

He urged them to set standards as Muslim men.
