Cabinet mulls debate on bills

Friday, August 8 2014

MINISTER of Justice Emmanuel George yesterday declined comment on the question of the timing and impact of Constitution reform, stating the matter was due to be discussed at Cabinet.

Asked about Opposition criticisms of a new bill proposing three major reforms next Monday, George said the Cabinet had not yet discussed the question of next week’s debate, but was still in progress as at yesterday afternoon.

George also declined comment on the question of pace of reform, of the process by which the Police Commissioner is selected, saying it did not fall under his portfolio.

That issue was raised by Professor Ramesh Deosaran in a resignation from the post of chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Wednesday.
