Another National Quarry worker was shot and killed yesterday afternoon while he was tending to a plot of land. Dead is Leon Daniel Clarke, 26 of Calvary Hill, Arima, a quarry worker and a father of two.
Relatives spoke with reporters at the Forensic Science Centre, in St James, and described the story of how their relative died.
“He had a piece of land, and since he started working in the quarry he wasn’t getting time to tend to it. He got time on Sunday, so he hired two other men and went with them to cut the grass on the land.
“At about 5.30 yesterday afternoon when he was finished and heading to his vehicle, he turned his back to open his vehicle and two gunmen approached from nearby bushes and opened fire on him. He died on the spot,” said his cousin, Chad Clarke. Chad described his cousin as a genuine, fun loving and helpful person. However, he did admit that the father of two, also had a checkered past.
“He wasn’t always on the right path, but he straightened himself out and started working at the quarry, and taking care of his kids. His last case was in June and the matter was dismissed.
He never used to lime and drink or anything like that because he was a Muslim.
He was genuine, fun-loving and helpful,” Chad said.
Autopsy reports confirmed that Clarke died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Clarke’s murder came days after a 36-year-old National Quarry employee, Imhotep Nicholas was riddled with bullets on Friday last, while washing his vehicle.
The murder toll for the year now stands at 271.
