Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Orville London, is describing an upcoming forum to discuss Tobago’s self governance as “decision time” as it has reached a critical stage.

London, speaking yesterday at the post-Executive Council briefing at THA’s Administrative Complex, said the forum will be held on September 14 at Signal Hill Secondary School. He said they have had close to six months of discussion in both Tobago and Trinidad, and he believes by now they have a clear idea as to what Tobagonians want.

“On September 14, what we would be doing is having those persons at that forum confer what Tobagonians want, and confer the way forward as we decide how are we going to translate those demands into a process,” he said. London addressed concerns that Tobago’s self governance meant secession from Trinidad.

“Nowhere did we get any concerted response from Tobagonians advocating secession. What we are talking about is that the sovereign democratic State of Trinidad and Tobago must remain united. But in that sovereign State the people of Tobago must have the right for self determination,” he said. He added they want to remain part of the Trinidad and Tobago family, but they have now reached the level of maturity as a people where they should be given the authority to determine what happens in their own space.

“We need to come to that session at Signal Hill where we can treat with any misconceptions, confer what we really want, and then decide how we operationalise those demands,” he said.
