TT on US Zika advisory list

Thursday, February 25 2016

HEALTH Minister Terrence Deyalsingh has said that his ministry was dealing with the Zika virus very seriously, even as the United States (US) has added Trinidad and Tobago to the list of countries, travellers, especially pregnant women, are at risk of acquiring the Zika virus.

The US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) added more than 30 countries to the list of the Americas, the Caribbean and the Pacific The CDC also announced that it was investigating 14 new reports of sexual transmission of the Zika virus, which included several pregnant women.

They were also advising that people who were having sex use condoms because of reports that the virus could be sexually transmitted.

A BBC report said that Venezuela was under reporting Zika cases, and junior doctors said they were overwhelmed with cases of a new illness which may, or may not be linked to Zika.

There has been one confirmed case of Zika in Trinidad. The virus was spread by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which also was the vector for dengue and yellow fever.

There have been tow additional blood samples sent to be tested for the Zika virus, but the minister said there were no results as yet.
