Zika Virus rate on the rise

Friday, June 24 2016

WITHIN the space of four days, the number of Zika Virus cases has jumped from 68 to 83. This was confirmed yesterday by the Health Ministry, following a consultation with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

There are no confirmed cases in Tobago at this time. CARPHA has advised that theirís was the only body authorised to confirm the diagnosis of the Zika virus in TT.

The last figure of 68 was given by Chief Medical Officer Dr Akenath Misir, on Monday. Despite measures being implemented and deterrents put in place by the ministry in an effort to curb the spread of the Zika virus, the figure just kept rising. In the past few months, the ministry, working together with the regional corporations, has been cleaning empty lots, abandoned buildings and clearing drains in a bid to keep down the breeding of mosquitoes.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said the key to fighting the vector for the virus, the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, was in citizens keeping their surroundings clean. While the ministry continued its efforts to monitor Zika and other mosquito borne diseases, citizens were encouraged to dispose of all unwanted containers/items in their yards, ensure that their drains and guttering allowed free flow of water, use bed nets and insect repellent that contained DEET as an active ingredient
