Kidnap victim found in pieces
Camille Clarke Monday, January 9 2006
The remains of former US soldier Ballram Maharaj were found in the lower Santa Cruz forest by the Federal Bureau of Investigaton (FBI) yesterday. The 63-year-old kidnap victim’s body was found nine months after he was snatched outside a San Juan bar. Maharaj’s body was found cut in pieces and disposed of into plastic barrels and put into two separate holes. When Maharaj went missing a small ransom had been paid by his family and the FBI from the United States became involved in the investigation. Maharaj who was residing at Chandy Lane in El Socorro was snatched by four men outside of the bar that day. Two men from the Santa Cruz area and two men from Mayaro have been held. The FBI along with the Arouca police spear-headed by Inspector Abraham went into the forest on Friday to search for the body. The remains have since been removed to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy will be performed.
