Good music from the old and not so old

Joan Rampersad Monday, January 23 2006

Given the deluge of so much passing off for soca, and more so music these days, the release of compilation discs by Sylvester Lockhart (Poser) and Nigel Lewis is a most welcome sound to the ears.

Poser recently released another one of his CDs entitled De Groove Continues that contains 14 tracks including two club mixes. the name of the CD speaks for itself and one can easily identify with the lyrics of each of his tracks, nine of which were composed by him. Those tracks are "Sweetness", "Country Girl", "Another Rounds", "Nothing Ent Change Part II", "Kaya Grass", "Granny’s Advice", Soca Test", "When You Nice" and "Pan Man".

The other songs on the CD are "Human Nature" composed by Winsford DesVines, "Beyond The Maze" and "Refugee" composed by Gregory Ballantyne and the two club mixes of "Sweetness" and "Another Rounds" respectively. All the songs on the CD were arranged by Leston Paul and Phillip Nicholas in New York.

Just as the case with Poser, Nigel Lewis features in every composition on his 16-track CD. Entitled The Chronicles of Nigel Lewis, this CD contains all the works of Lewis in his relatively short career thus far. Those tracks are "Walk Away", "Soca Vibes" (Play de Soca), "Bounce With Me", "That’s My Girl", "Ah Want To See Yuh", "Follow The Leader 2006", "Movin" (1996 Road March), "Take Dat And Cool It", "Naked U Come Naked U Go", "Respond", "R U Ready", "The Urge" featuring Marvin Lewis, "This Is Home" featuring John King and Marvin Lewis, "Daisu" (That Is You) featuring Billy D Kid and Marvin Lewis and both "Underneath" and "Welcome" (The after party) featuring Roger George.

Apart from featuring in every composition, Lewis also arranged and played all instruments on the recordings with little input for single songs from other arrangers P Barrette, Graham Wilson and Nicolas Branker.

Some of his co-writers are P Barrette, Roger George, Cecil Taylor, William Selkridge and David Simmons and other instrumentalists featuring single tracks are Ronald Fontenelle (guitar), Conroy Anglin, (guitar), Alaina Reed and Jacqueline Tammy Parks (Bass), Arnold "Sly" Punette (guitar), Dave Richards (bass), Graham Wilson and David Simmons.

Background vocalists include Jacqueline Lewis, Roger George, Jasmine Murray, Yolanda Lewis, Marimba Jeremy, Marvin Lewis, Devry Ross and John King. Lewis and Lewis Publishing Company, and Res’House Records Inc (Miami) were responsible for the publishing of the CD.
