CWU wishes Castro speedy recovery

Tuesday, August 8 2006

Secretary General of the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU), Lyle Townsend, has written Cuban president, Fidel Castro, wishing him a speedy recovery from his illness.

Last week, Castro underwent surgery for intestinal bleeding and temporarily handed over power to his brother Raul Castro.

However, Cuba’s Vice President, Carlos Lage denied reports that Castro had stomach cancer and said the president has been made well by the operation and is recuperating favourably.

Townsend, in his letter to Castro conveyed deepest concerns and sincere wishes for his recovery on behalf of the members, officers and executive of the CWU.

He also told Castro he had no doubt that he would return to his official duties soon and said he looked forward to meeting him when he visits Cuba on official business soon.
