Persons fasting for Lent had something to smile about yesterday as favourite fishes — King and Carite — were at their cheapest so far for the season.

Most fish vendors on George Street, Port-of-Spain were selling King Fish at $23 a pound while Carite was priced at $20 per pound. Several fish vendors though said that the price was still high. They said this was due to a scarcity of fish.

“Fish is scarce and expensive,” said one vendor. Harry’s Mini Mart proprietor though boasted loudly that his fish was priced at $5. a pound. “Mix fish that is,” he explained when he attracted the attention of passers-by.

He too quoted a price of $23. for a pound of King fish. At other fish shops, the cheapest seafood was Cro Cro which sold for $8. per pound.

On the Trinidad and Tobago National Agricultural Market Information System(NAMIS) website, there were no statistics available for the fish volumes coming into the Port-of-Spain Wholesale Fish Market yesterday.

At the Orange Valley Wholesale Fish Market in Central Trinidad, Carite volumes were dismal with 22.68kg coming in a drop of 839.15kg when compared to Thursday’s volume. The price though dropped by $2.20, from $39.68 to $37.48 per kg.

King Fish volumes doubled between Thursday and yesterday and were at 272.16kg, a climb from 136.08kg. The cost was $44.09 per kg an increase of $4.41.
