BRITISH national Michael Ian Thrush, 43, who was working in Trinidad and Tobago as a Senior Marketing Advisor for the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) for the past three years died instantly when his car slammed into a garbage truck yesterday morning.

According to a police report, at about 5 am Thrush was driving his green Cifero in a northerly direction along the Saddle Road in Maraval when the accident occurred. Police said that just as Thrush was approaching the vicinity of Linda’s Bakery, he lost control of the vehicle which slammed into the garbage truck, owned by Waste Disposal Limited of Pioneer Drive, Sea Lots, Port- of-Spain. Thrush, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died on the spot. He lived at the Greens, Fairways, Maraval.

Police said the garbage truck was at the time being loaded with piles of garbage by its workers, who all escaped injuries. The truck was impounded at the St Clair Police Station pending investigations.

Officers attached to the St Clair Police Station including Sgt Ajith Persad, Cpl Volan Francis and PC Lamy visited the scene. The District Medical Officer ordered the body’s removal to the Forensic Science Centre in St James.

In a release, TSTT extended its condolences to Thrush’s wife Stephanie and his three children, all residents of the United Kingdom.

TSTT’s CEO Roberto Peon said they were shocked and saddened upon hearing the news. “Needless to say we at TSTT are shocked and saddened at Ian’s passing. Ian served as the company’s Senior Marketing Advisor since 2004 and played a pivotal role in the company’s transition into full competition,” Peon said.

“He served with distinction and we will miss his wise counsel. But more than this, Ian was a good person. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of distress and mourning,” he added.

Investigations are continuing.
