The PNM’s return to power has been celebrated by Prime Minister Patrick Manning as “God’s victory.”

Manning thanked thousands of supporters for helping him to win a consecutive tenth term as the MP for San Fernando East.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God,” he told his constituents at about 11.18 pm at the party’s San Fernando East headquarters, Coffee Street, San Fernando last night. Manning won an estimated 10,320 votes, while his nearest rival, the COP’s Mervyn Assam copped 3,084 votes and the UNC A candidate Frederick Norman received 1,630 votes.

More than 15,000 persons cast their ballots in the constituency.

“I know of no other politician, and San Fernando East is making history, by this decision,” he said.

Manning advised the supporters that while they celebrate, they “had to put animosities aside” and hold no grudge against their political opponents.

“Celebrate but do so peacefully, do not mar our victory by any untoward incidents,” he said.
