TABAQUITE MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, in a letter to Prime Minster Patrick Manning, warned that if Government continues with a plan to build an aluminium smelter, “the people will fight you in the East, West, North and South.”

In a three-page letter, the former Attorney General highlighted the environmental impact and health risks to humans, such a smelter would have.

“The people are going to fight you in the courts, in the Senate and House of Representatives...in every level of political and social life and even the Privy Council if necessary,” Maharaj warned in the letter.

“Notwithstanding the order of the court, you continue as head of government to make public statements to subvert and undermine the decision of the court,” Maharaj said in the letter.

“This wave of industrialisation would not improve the lives of our people but provide a platform for massive corruption. The natural resources of the country are becoming depleted, the people who own these resources are becoming poorer,” Maharaj said.

He added that the PM owes a duty to the people to put them first and since the industrialisation policy is against the people, “you must cancel that policy.”
