Hard at work: Chinese labourers carry out construction work at the Lighthouse of the Lord Jesus Church in the Heights of Guanapo, Arima yesterday....

Chinese labourers who were suddenly removed from the construction site where the Lighthouse of the Lord Jesus Christ church is being built at the Heights of Guanapo, are back on the job.

The labourers, employed by the Shanghai Construction Group (SCG), were transferred to the Tarouba stadium last month, after the building inspector at the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation Larry Seecharan served a “show cause” notice to an official at SCG.

Villagers at the Heights of Guanapo, where the controversial church is being built, told Newsday the Chinese labourers returned yesterday and started work on the roof of the building, which is expected to cost $30 million. The church is reportedly owned by Juliana Pena, who is the spiritual adviser of Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

Sources at the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation told Newsday they were given specific instructions not to serve any notices on the church being built, and this led to work being resumed there.
