OPPOSITION LEADER Dr Keith Rowley wants to find out whether new acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams is prepared to conduct a criminal investigation against former FIFA vice-president and now National Security Minister Jack Warner.

Speaking shortly after “breaking fast” at the Mucurapo Street Mosque in San Fernando on Thursday, Rowley reminded that the investigations were being conducted on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“There you have the minister dismissing the issue and the minister is saying there is no issue and we the people of Trinidad and Tobago are saying there are issues to be investigated,” he said. As his first order of business, Rowley wants acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams to investigate the circumstances surrounding the resignation of Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs.

Rowley declared that he is not confident that the resignation of Gibbs would bring about any improvement and changes in crime fighting.

“This has nothing to do with whether the Police Commissioner was performing or not because if that was the case then the assessment of his performance, and the Deputy Commissioner, ought to have been done by the Police Service Commission and the reason for that is to preserve the independence of the office of the Police Commissioner,” Rowley said.
