AG: Deonarine Clico deal for DPP
Friday, October 18 2013
ATTORNEY General Anand Ramlogan says he will be writing Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard this morning to investigate a land deal involving Independent Liberal Party (ILP) interim deputy political leader Anna Deonarine-Rampersad on whether it was a fraudulent transaction meant to siphon money from Clico.
“I have drafted a letter to send to the honourable DPP in the morning (this morning). And I have highlighted the facts. And I am asking him to investigate whether this is a fraudulent, sham transaction which was designed to give a vehicle to siphon $13 million out of Clico, put it beyond the reach of the poor people who put their money in Clico, so that they wouldn’t have access to that money,” he said. He was speaking last night at the People’s Partnership political meeting at Gasparillo Junction. He said the “facts” were that Deonarine-Rampersad’s family bought a 20 acre parcel of agricultural land for $220,000 from Thackoor Boodram, brother of executed drug lord Dole Chadee. Boodram was beheaded in December 1997. Ramlogan noted they subsequently received a valuation for $11 million and questioned if they got Town and Country Planning approval to convert the land from agricultural to residential. He said Clico then bought the land for $2 million extra without any residential approval, adding thtat Deonarine-Rampersad’s mother took the $13 million after she sold the land and put it in Deonarine-Rampersad’s name.
