Finance Bill passed — Imbert: PNM will save TT

Wednesday, January 13 2016

FINANCE Minister Colm Imbert vowed that the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) will save this country from the problems it is facing. Imbert made this vow as he concluded debate on the Finance Bill 2016 in the House of Representatives on Monday night.

The bill was passed with amendments, and will be debated in the Senate on Friday. Imbert praised the Parliament’s staff for drafting a document which clearly outlined to members the pertinent facts about the bill, its intent and the various pieces of legislation that would be amended to facilitate the measures in the bill.

The Minister said, “I’m rather disappointed that members opposite did not avail themselves of the excellent research done by the Parliament.” Saying the country did not reach to the state it was in by chance, and slamming the Opposition for its continued allegation that Government had no plan to address the country’s economic challenges, Imbert said the bill is just one element of Government’s plan to restructure the economy. “We are very serious,” Imbert declared as Government MPs thumped their desks in support. The Minister said he is often reminded of a quote by actor Michael Douglas in the film The American President in which Douglas played the lead role. “We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them,” he said. However Imbert added, “The members opposite are not in the least bit interested in solving the problems that are facing this country.”
