Khan eyes Bermudez national squash prize

Sunday, May 17 2009

TOP NATIONAL ace Rhea Khan advanced to last evening’s final of the women’s open category in the Bermudez National Squash Championships.

In Friday’s semi-final round at the Cascadia Squash Courts in St Ann’s, Khan, the number one seed in the division, trounced fourth-seeded Ingrid Lloyd 11-5, 11-5, 12-10.

Khan was due to meet teenager Jessica Scott in the decider — Scott eliminated second-seeded Michele Cornilliac 11-8, 11-3, 11-8, 11-8.

Scott will not be any pushover in the final, having ousted third-seeded Karina Lutchmeesingh in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

The tournament was due to end last evening with the finals of the men’s, women’s and veterans’ categories.

The men’s quarter-finals on Friday saw one of the most nail-biting encounters in the competition, as second seed Paul De Verteuil and Marc Pontifex went tooth and nail to get the better of each other, but De Verteuil prevailed 12-10, 7-11, 11-3, 4-11, 14-12 to advance to the last four.

De Verteuil was due to meet Ryan Abraham in the semis — Abraham spanked Roger Salandy 11-6, 11-5, 11-6.

Number one seed Colin Ramasra and Kale Wilson were expected to face off in the other semi — Ramasra thrashed Peter Pirtheesingh 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 while Wilson took care of Kevin Ross 11-4, 11-6, 11-6.

In the men’s veterans semi-finals on Friday, top seed John Holley cruised past Duncan Smart 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 while Roger Salandy halted second seed Brian Jackson 14-16, 12-10, 11-7, 13-11.
