STUDENTS of Sankar’s School of Taekwondo displayed impressive form and skill at the second tournament held by their school on July 4 at Apple Blossom Avenue, Petit Valley.

There were also participants from Briggs School, Holy Rosary, Maria Goretti and the hosts between ages of five and ten.

Isabel Rodriguez, ten, of Sankar’s Main Dojang, showed great confidence and strength to capture the Most Outstanding Fighter and Best Overall Fighter awards.

Stefan Biput, nine years old, of Holy Rosary School, was very impressive, bagging the Most Improved Fighter accolade while Brittany Harford of Briggs School was named the Most Promising Fighter.

After the competition ended, a Poomsae demonstration was staged by three senior athletes. A Poomsae (Form) consists of a pattern of pre-arranged Taekwondo moves involving blocks, strikes and kicks.

In performing a Poomsae, the Taekwondo practitioner fights off imaginary opponents, who may attack from multiple directions.

Anthony Ferguson, TT Taekwondo Association (TTTA) president, was present to support the young fighters and give advice.

He explained the advantages of Poomsae as it develops concentration, balance, coordination and flexibility.

He also reiterated the important Tenets of Taekwondo which include courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.

For more information about classes contact Sankar’s School of Taekwondo teacher Cheryl Ann Sankar 782-3769.
