Caledonia, Joe Public battle for top positionTuesday, July 28 2009
CALEDONIA AIA and Joe Public will battle for the top spot in the Digicel Pro League as their Round Two Match Day Three fixture takes place this evening, from 7 pm, at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.
With leaders San Juan Jabloteh inactive today, Caledonia and Joe Public will each need a draw in order to overtake Jabloteh for first place.
Both Caledonia and Joe Public have 25 points, with identical goal difference (plus 15) but Caledonia is in second position by virtue of more victories than Joe Public (eight to Joe Public’s seven).
National coach Russell Latapy may suit up for his third straight match for Caledonia, while Joe Public will try to remain in the title chase, despite the suspension of five of their starters due to a ruling by the League’s Disciplinary Committee, arising from a July 4 fracas against United Petrotrin.
The scheduled clash between Jabloteh and arch-rivals W Connection have been postponed due to both teams’ participation in this week’s Preliminary Round First Leg of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Tomorrow, Jabloteh will be away to San Francisco FC of Panama while, on Thursday, W Connection will host New York Red Bulls from the United States MLS.
Ma Pau will remain in fourth spot, regardless of their result versus Tobago United at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima.
That match starts at 4 pm with the youthful Ma Pau seeking to extend their two-game unbeaten run while Tobago will be vying for their second successive triumph.A double-header is scheduled to take place at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Balmain, Couva from 4 pm.
Defence Force, who battled to a goalless draw against Connection at Couva on Saturday night, will oppose lowly FC South End at four o’clock while, two hours later, Police and St Ann’s Rangers will square off as both teams look to climb from the bottom of the standings.
South End, like Rangers, are in the midst of financial strife, so much so that their coach Anthony Rougier has recently registered to be a player, in order to assist the debutant club stay in the reckoning this season.
Rangers have lost their influential captain and striker Errol McFarlane, who has taken up a contract with Rochester Rhinos in the United Soccer League (USL).
