Canadian expert shares knowledge

Monday, November 16 2009

SIFU Aaron Alexis of the Tai Chi Institute is back in Trinidad to share his knowledge of Wing Chun Kung Fu learnt at the Canada Wushu Federation in Canada.

Alexis has been visiting the Canada Wushu Federation during the summer for the past three years where he has been under the guidance of Grand Master Sunny Tang, executive member of the International Wushu Federation.

Grand Master Sunny Tang has been teaching Wing Chun Kung Fu in Canada for the past 50 years and has passed on his knowledge to Alexis.

The style was invented by a priest in the Shaolin Monastery and uses short, economical and direct movements. Its technique explodes from an “A” posture similar to a pyramid shape.

Wing Chun experts can break three boards with a fist two inches away. Grand Master Sunny Tang has hosted the tenth World Wushu Championships which attracted competitors from 83 countries including TT.

Monthly trials, tournaments and full contact fighting will take place to raise the standard of Wushu in TT. The Wushu Association of TT will conduct a National Championship for (Taolu) Forms and Weapons on November 29 at the Tai Chi Institute, 22 Agra Street, St James.

The next event will be held on December 6 and will include Full Contact fights of (San Shou) Wushu Chinese kickboxing.

On December 12, the Wushu Association will host their awards ceremony at the St Augustine dojo, St John’s road, St Augustine.

Dr Lionel Gaskin Mayers will be the feature speaker.

For tickets call 688-7010 or 620-9027.
