Kickboxing team for B’dos

Friday, November 20 2009

THE National Kickboxing Council of Trinidad and Tobago (NKCTT), has announced the participation of a Trinidad and Tobago’s Team in a regional tournament being hosted by the National Kickboxing League (NKL) of Barbados tomorrow.

The NKL is the NSO recognised for the sport in Barbados, currently presided over by Wayne Quintyne. The TT team was selected from Lion’s Muay Thai Gym (Princes Town), Golden Phoenix School of Martial Arts and Kickboxing (California), and Five Cobras Gym (Williamsville).

TT will be represented in the following divisions: Kerwyn Edwards — Heavy Weight; Roy Straker — Super Middle Weight; Jameel Lee — Light Weight; Omkar — Welter Weight; Seeram Maraj — Feather Weight.

NKCTT Director Zafrullah Gaskin is the Coach and Manager escorting the team. They are scheduled to leave for Barbados today and return on Monday.

TT’s participation in this tournament comes as part of the NKCTT’s development programme for the sport, giving the novices an opportunity to compete at a more challenging level.

They will be following in the footsteps of their senior counterparts who have successfully contested international fights over the years, from Suriname, St Maarten, Curacao, Martinique and recently the USA to name a few.

In addition, Edwards, Lee and Maraj were crowned NKCTT National Amateur Champions on July 11 this year. The Executive of the NKCTT wishes to extend best wishes to the TT novice team on their upcoming challenge.

The NKCTT is also extending open invitations to the Martial Arts schools that desire to become members of the NKCTT and give their students an opportunity to represent Trinidad and Tobago in all forms of Kickboxing and Muay-Thai.

Additionally, the NKCTT will be conducting certified coaches’ courses which will be facilitated by Brendon Burke who is authorised by the International Federation of Muay-Thai to train coaches.

The NKCTT Executive has also thanked Miscellaneous Marketing for sponsorship of the team’s outfit, and the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs for their generous support to the continued development of the sport.

Members who are interested in attaining their certification in coaching, or those who wish to get more information on the sport can contact 784-1615 or 780-8116, or email the NKCTT Executive at nationalkickboxingcouncil@gmail.com for more details.
