Bernard stars at Team Elite karate

Team Elite Karate hosted their 2nd Inter-dojo Karate competition on Sunday with six schools competing including Sangre Grande Presbyterian Primary, St Francis RC Primary, Sangre Grande Hindu, Guaico Presbyterian Primary, Sangre Grande Secondary and Guaico Government Secondary. The day was filled with excitement as karatekas from five years old showcased their skills at the Guaico Secondary School in Turure.

Spectators were treated to six divisions of competition — kata, kumite, mat routine, self defence, continuous sparring and team kumite. Guaico Presbyterian’s Sherynse Bernard earned gold and silver in kumite and mat routine respectively in the girls six and under division while Jedaiah Navarro took silver and gold in the same events for Sangre Grande Hindu School. In the boys equivalent Samuel Hamilton grabbed gold medals in kata, kumite and self defence and took the bronze in the mat routine while competing for St Francis school.

Rajin Ramoutar earned two silver medals for Hindu School in kata and kumite.

Kyron Toussaint topped the boys 7-9 category with two gold medals in kata and kumite for St Francis RC. His schoolmate Che Charles had two bronze in kata and self defence.

Guaico Presbyterian’s T’Shaun Skinner bagged silver kumite, kata and self-defence while Sangre Chiquito’s Arie Lazar was third in kumite and self defence.

Damain Joseph of Sangre Chiquito fought his way to victory in the boys ten-12 age group, taking gold in his mat routine and bronze in self defence.

In the girls equivalent, St Francis RC student Samantha Winter fought her way to a silver medal in kata but was unstoppable in kumite and mat routine as she placed first in each.

Other medallists were — Kiylan Oxley (gold in kumite and silver in kata), Darien Lakhan (bronze in kata and kumite), Cassious Chandree (gold in kata and self defence, second in mat routine and third in kumite), Dwayne Jupiter (second in kumite and third in kata), Keeon Toussaint (third in kata, kumite and mat routine), Renaldo Ragoonath (first in kata, kumite and mat routine and second in self defence), Kareem Ali (bronze in kumite), Maria Maharaj (gold in kumite), Sheldon Lafon (second and third in kumite and kata respectively), Keston Dyer (first in self defence and third in kumite), Lorenzo Lynch (gold in kata, kumite and mat routine and second in self defence), Sherwyn Collins (gold in kumite) and Junior Kissoon (silver in kumite).
