El Dorado beat Naparima for Intercol crownWednesday, December 2 2009
The score-line was 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation time, but the Trevor Spicer-coached El Dorado held their nerves to claim their second-ever National Intercol crown, after their 1986 success.
And this win was a measure of revenge for El Dorado, who lost 2-0 to Naparima in the 2007 final at Marabella.
Xavier Ravenales put the El Dorado squad ahead after 31 minutes but they suffered a major setback 11 minutes later when Keron Hernandez was issued a red card by referee Lee Davis for violent conduct.
And their worries magnified in the 72nd when goalkeeper Christian Edwards failed to gather a ball and national Under-17 striker Shahdon Winchester netted the equaliser.
In the shoot-out, after the first four kicks by each team, the scores were 3- 3 — Keelon Joseph, Harmony Munroe and Khavior Graham netted for El Dorado while Dwayne Edwards, Anthony Parris and Winchester replied for Naparima.
National Under-20 defender Daniel Cyrus, who took El Dorado’s second kick, saw it saved by Adisa Cumberbatch while Naparima’s Jared Bennett, with his team’s fourth attempt, was denied by Christian Edwards.
Maun Mohammed put El Dorado ahead but Steven Joseph, needing to score to push the game into sudden-death penalties, skied his left-footer overbar.
Earlier in the day, Debe High retained their BGTT Girls Intercol title with a comfortable 1-0 victory over Signal Hill.
Striker Elizabeth Ng Wai got the 15th minute winner to guarantee the win for Debe, who were without influential captain and forward Mariah Shade.
Shade suffered a thigh injury for Trinidad and Tobago against Jamaica recently, but Debe were too much to handle for Signal Hill, who struggled to make any impact on the proceedings.
