CARLON HUGHES is the leading goalscorer with seven goals for Mayaro Spurs....

MAYARO Spurs FC and Rio Claro United are locked at the top of the 2010 bpTT Mayaro Football League Senior Division standings with 12 points each after four rounds of competition.

Former champions Spurs lead on goal difference, having scored 19 goals and conceding only one in their unbeaten run so far. Rio Claro, who finished in mid-table last season, are having the best showing since joining the league a few years ago. They trail Spurs in the standings by a goal difference of two.

Spurs owe their prolific scoring form mainly to striker Carlon “Bound to Score” Hughes who has netted seven times after four rounds. He is tied for top spot in the leading goal-scorers table with Mafeking United’s Leroy Jones, followed by Afiba McDonald (Ozone United) and Devon Drayton (Panhandle Youth Movement) on 6 each.

Panhandle Youth Movement and Mayaro Boys FC are tied for third place with 10 points each from three wins and a draw. A total of 14 teams are competing in the Senior Division.

Last year’s champions Illusions FC, who have opted out of this year’s competition, and played an exhibition match against an Invitation X1 yesterday.

Matches in three divisions — Senior, Under-18 and Under-15 — are played at the Mayaro Recreation Ground.
