Hagley, Mc Shine win Newsday 5K

Matthew Hagley and Kema Mc Schine won the men and women categories respectively at the Newsday/Caribbean Lifestyle Communications Network Republic Day 5K Fun Run and Cycle Classic at King George V Park in St Clair on Saturday.

Hagley took an early lead which he never relinquished in the men’s race. He crossed the finish line in 15 minutes and 53 seconds with Kelvin Johnson of Trinidad and Tobago Road Runners Club the runner-up in a time of 15 minutes and 53 seconds.

Lionel Dandrade of Trinidad and Tobago Road Runners club was third in 16 minutes and 22 seconds. Mc Shine who is from a family of well known runners easily claimed the top spot in the women’s race.

She finished in a quick time of 18 minutes and 57 seconds with Katicha John of Club One Week the runner-up in 19 minutes and 56 seconds.

She was followed by teammate Thais Gutierrez in a time of 21 minutes and 14 seconds.

The feature 30-lap cycle event was won by Sebastien Vidale of the Dominican Republic, followed by local riders Emile Abraham and Adam Alexander. Guy Costa who was among the favourites to win the race finished sixth.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Newsday “Save the Street Children” programme.
