Schools swim at Macoya

Saturday, February 4 2012

THE SIXTH Blink/bMobile National Secondary Schools Swim Meet will take place tomorrow at the Swimming Complex at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya with over 500 swimmers expected to participate.

The event, hosted by Tidal Wave Aquatics Club, under the auspices of the Amateur Swimming Association of Trinidad and Tobago, is seen as essential into fostering the development of young swimmers, hoping to be groomed as national prospects.

St Mary’s College will defend the Boys title while St Joseph’s Convent, Port-of-Spain will defend the Girls title.

St George’s College are the defending co-ed school champs while James Gillette (CIC) and Jewel Mulrain (St George’s College) were the top male and female swimmers at last year’s meet.

With this swim meet being the prestige event of Secondary Schools competition for over twenty five years for thousands of past swimmers, the meet is still dubbed as the platform for friendly rivalry, healthy competition and a launching pad for those talented, non-competitive athletes to delve into the competitive and national arenas.

Tidal Wave representative, Hazel Haynes, indicated, “The Tidal Wave team is elated to host the event once again as we have had the privilege of doing so since 2004. We owe our sponsors a debt of gratitude for showing so much interest and investing in the nation’s youth and their sporting activities. We are grateful for their unwavering support of this event since 2006 and continuing up to today,” as she expanded on the involvement of Blink/bMobile and their innovative incentives offered.

She added, “The sport balances out the students’ social, physical, and psychological well-being and makes for a much more productive person all- round and high performers academically. Parents, teachers, coaches, sponsors and peers provide the sound support system for the swimmers and we look forward to yet another successful event,” as she ended in reference to the professional and eager approach adopted by the constituents of the much-anticipated event.
