Tobago athletes shine

Saturday, February 4 2012

ZAKIYA DENOON and Shalena Richards copped seven gold medals altogether at the annual Speyside High School Sports Meet held at Speyside Recreation Grounds, Tobago on January 25 and 26.

Denoon powered to four gold in the Girls’ Under-20 100-metre, 200m and 400m races, and still had enough energy to lead her school house Robinson to victory in the 4x100 relay.

Her golden performances put her in a strong position for the forthcoming Tobago Zonal Secondary Schools Championships, which runs off on Monday and Tuesday.

Denoon is the reigning National Secondary Schools Girls’ Under-17 100 and 200m champion. At last year’s CARIFTA Games, she also received bronze in the Girls’ Under-17 sprint relay.

Richards won triple-gold when she sprinted to victory in the Girls’ Under-14 100m, 200m, 400m events. Her teammate Ryan Maycock also captured the Boys’ Under-15 200m and 400m gold and claimed bronze in the 100m event.

Others copping two gold medals were the Abraham house trio of Roldon Kerr (Boys’ Under-20 100m, 200m), Ayoka Lovell (Girls’ Under-17 100m, 200m), Amarilily Marcelle (Girls’ Under-15 100m, 400m) and Tyrik Skeete Phillips in the Boys’ Under-14 100, 200m. Abraham House captured the March past title. Meanwhile Mark London, Franklyn Staniclaus and Rayshon Alleyne all copped three titles at the Bishop’s High Sports.

London, who was a double CARIFTA champion in 2010, got gold medals in the Boys’ Under-20 400m (52.0 seconds), 800m (2:15:0) and 1500m (4:23:0). His house-team Davis, was also victorious in the 4x400m relay.

Stanisclaus, also of Davies, swept the Boys’ Under-14 100m (11.81), 200m (26.37) and 400m (1:00:81) while Alleyne of Reid house, copped the Boys’ Under-15 400m, 800m, 1500m.

Other winners were Haysean Cowie-Clarke (Boys’ Under 20 100m, 200m), Edson Moses (Boys’ Under-17 High Jump and 400m), Natasha Radgman (Girls Under-17 400m), Akini Hislop (Boys’ Under-15 100m, 200m) and Trishelle Leacock (Girls’ Under-17 100m, 200m).

Omundez Loyuk of Davies house won the Boys’ Under-20 discus event. Last year’s CARIFTA Boys Under-17 discus champion Shervorne Worrell was defeated in the Boys’ Under-20 discus event by Loyuk.

Davies house went on to capture the March Past honours.
