Bravo prefers Tests over IPL

By RENALDO MATADEEN Wednesday, February 15 2012

Trinidad and Tobago’s star batsman, Darren Bravo, has professed his desire to play for the ‘Red Force’ and the West Indies team in forthcoming months, and is negotiating with his IPL franchise, Deccan Chargers, to facilitate these notions.

Bravo has established himself as a key member of the regional Test and ODI teams and much will be expected of him against the visiting Australia team next month.

“I’m negotiating with the WICB and the Deccan Chargers to allow me to feature, once selected, for the Australia tour. Whatever capacity it is, whether Test or ODI; that will be my priority, as representing the West Indies in such a prestigious series is a dream for any cricketer. I want to be available for this series and I’m hoping to finalise a deal with the Deccan outfit where I can play for them after the Australia series,” Bravo declared.

Bravo’s desire to don the West Indian colours comes on the heels of ex-Aussie skipper, Steve Waugh, praising him (Bravo) as a highly exceptional and consistent player that is on the verge of duplicating the batting success of Brian Lara. On Waugh’s lauding, Bravo modestly replied, “It’s such a great feeling to receive accolades from someone like Steve (Waugh). He’s a legend not only to Australia but to the game of cricket. I respect him not only as a cricketer but as a leader and for someone like him, outside the region, to praise me like that drives me to keep working hard, stay focussed and play to the best of my ability.”

Bravo reiterated that his hard work is something he believes will pay dividends once he maintains his form and also his humility. Bravo shot into the international limelight with a prolific tour, albeit a losing one, to India in 2011, where he notched Test scores of 136 and 166 in the series, complementing the year with a bolstering knock of 195 at Bangladesh. Looking towards, tomorrow’s Regional Four-Day match versus Barbados, Bravo said his team-mates are all eager to take on their rival.

“The guys (TT) are elated after toppling CCC. They (CCC) gave us trouble in the past but now we look forward to Barbados, especially as they have a robust pace setup with Best (Tino) and Fidel (Edwards) in tandem. However, once we maintain our strategy and play together as we usually do, I think we can get off to an aggressive start and set the pace. Whatever plans the Bajans come with, I am sure we will respond with positive cricket and counter them well. We, too, have impressive bowlers and batsmen.” Bravo also pointed out.
