The TTCB Powerplay franchise cricket tournament bowls off today with a doubleheader at the Queen’s Park Oval. The four teams in the competition will all be on show with Trini Posse coming up against Angostura White Oak at 3pm while four hours later Petrotrin and Carib Bears will do battle.

The winners of today’s contests will advance to the final at 2.30 pm on Sunday while the losers will play the third place playoff tomorrow at 2.30 pm.

The champion of the inaugural franchise tournament will earn $30,000 for their efforts.

Speaking to Newsday yesterday, Carib Bears skipper, Adrian Barath, expressed confidence in his squad and noted they have been training very hard for their opening fixture.

“I think we have a really good chance. It’s a great opportunity for me to be captain and it’s a privilege to be the first captain of this franchise. We’ve had some sessions and we’re trying to get the unit working together.

The little time we had we tried to make it count. We even trained on the holiday (Labour Day) at the Oval,” he remarked.

And despite losing previous captain, Samuel Badree, to the West Indies ‘A’ team, Barath believes Imran Khan, Sherwin Ganga and Nikita Miller will step up in his absence and make a huge impact in the spin department.

Meanwhile, Trini Posse captain, Justin Guillen, is also confident going into his match against Angostura. Trini Posse played a practice match against Carib on Sunday which they won by eight wickets and have been slowly building towards peak form.
