Dream Team edge North Oropouche

Tuesday, July 10 2012

DREAM Team got their campaign in the Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond Football League off to a dream start on Sunday with a tense 3-1 victory over North Oropouche at the Fishing Pond Recreation Ground.

Leon Durity opened the scoring in the first half for Dream Team as the Hayden Diaz-coached team dominated their opponents.

They doubled their lead in the 20th minute after the North Oropouche defence had several opportunities but failed to clear the danger in their area.

The ball finally fell to Joel Hoyte on the right flank and he delivered a perfect cross to Jameel Sempel who volleyed home in the six-yard box.

Dream Team captain, John Stewart, could have made it 3-0 soon after, dribbling right through the heart of the defence before rifling a right-footer that was parried away by the North Oropouche goalkeeper.

It was one-way traffic until the half-time whistle but Dream Team could not find a third goal.

Their lack of accuracy in front goal continued to haunt them in the second period with Akeem Alvarez missing two chances. North Oropouche were slowly coming into the game and sounded a warning with a couple of close efforts - none closer than one that crashed off the post. Dream Team would finally pay for their wastefulness with Keal Victor pulling his team within one. But after missing several glorious chances, Kern Diaz put the result beyond doubt with a simple tap-in five minutes before the whistle.

Earlier, defending champion Xpress Overcome hammered AC Problems 4-1 to send a message to all that they are still the team to beat.

Last year’s MVP, Gorean Highley, was at his best with two first half goals while David Power added another to virtually end the match with the score 3-0 at the halfway stage. Aleandro Jones scored to reduce the deficit but Xpress’ Devon Daniel bagged to put the nail in the coffin.

On Saturday, Kevin Jagdeosingh netted a hat-trick to give Take That and Cool It a 3-1 victory over Quash Trace. Kendall Paul opened the scoring in the first half, heading in a corner to excite the Quash Trace supporters. But in the second half, Jagdeosingh took the game by the scruff of its neck, banging in three goals to tilt the match in his team’s favour.

Also, Coca United hammered Comparo United 5-1 led by a hat-trick from Anderson Richardson. Coca led 2-1 at the break through a brace from Bunny Richardson while Ryan Martinez scored for Comparo. Richardson was unstoppable in the second period to make the final score look very impressive.

Action continues this weekend with doubleheaders on both days. On Saturday, Dream team face Comparo at 2.15pm while two hours later, Boys Town meet Fishing Pond FC. On Sunday, Coca All-Stars tackle North Oropouche at 2.15pm while in the second match, Red Machine come up against Quash Trace Back-Ah-Yard.
