TRINIDAD AND Tobago inched closer towards retaining the George Teale Trophy, in the women’s division, on the penultimate day of the RBC Royal Bank-sponsored 56th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships at the Royal St Kitts Golf Club, Frigate Bay, St Kitts. The threesome of Monifa Sealy, Brittany Marquez and Kelsey Lou Hing combined for a score of 150, for a three-day total of 444.

Puerto Rico amassed a score of 147 to reduce the gap between themselves and Trinidad and Tobago from nine shots to six, while the Cayman Islands are a distant third with 480. The TT pair of Fabien Lee Foon and Arjoon Samlal are in prime position to claim the Higgs and Trophy, in the super-seniors category, having scored 66 yesterday for a total of 211. Puerto Rico, who were two strokes ahead on Thursday, posted 73 to end the day on 216 while Jamaica kept their third spot with 224.

Trinidad and Tobago are in a tough battle to retain both the Francis Steele Perkins Cup, for the seniors, and Ramon Baez Trophy, for the mid-amateurs.

In the seniors section, the pair of Carlos “Sexy” Baynes and Michael Commissiong slipped back to fifth, from their overnight third, with 77, for a tally of 225.

Bahamas are ahead of the pack with 218, followed by Puerto Rico on 221, Jamaica on 223 and Barbados (who began the day as joint leaders to Bahamas) on 224. The TT duo of Mahendra Rajkumar and Clint Alfred moved up a notch, from seventh to sixth, in the mid-amateurs division with 69, for a tally of 217.

Keeping their lead were the Dominican Republic with 202, with Jamaica and Puerto Rico trailing on 205 and 206 respectively.

The Dominican Republic and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are the only teams in major contention for the Hoerman Cup, for the top men’s team. The Dominican Republic have a score of 870, with the OECS next on 877 and 2011 champs Puerto Rico third on 889. Trinidad and Tobago (Talin Rajendranath, Alderray Downes, Deryck Gonsalves, Jake Delaney and Jessel Mohammed) stayed in sixth spot with 945.

The tournament will conclude today.
