Stampfli, Won Yang into Coca Cola tennis doubles

By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH Saturday, August 11 2012

SECOND seeded team, Breana Stampfli and Korean teammate Jeung Won Yang advanced to the finals of the Girls Doubles yesterday, as the Coca Cola International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tournament continues in St Lucia.

Stampfli and her partner booked a finalist spot after they defeated compatriot Kezia Koroma and Bajan Cherise Slocombe in their semi-final clash. The Stampfli/Yang combination meant business and powered into the finals with a confident 6-3, 6-2 win over Koroma/ Slocombe. They will now face the top seeded US sisters-team of Alexandra and Madison Bourguignon in the championship match.

In the quarter-final stages, Stampfli/ Yang blew past Dominique Mortier (Bahamas) and D’Jeri Raymond (Antigua) 6-2, 6-2 while Koroma/ Slocombe overpowered Julia Natasha Anastasia D’Auvergne (St Lucia) 6-1, 6-2.

Stampfli would have to make her shot at the Doubles title count since she failed to attain a finalist spot in the semi-final stages of the Women’s Singles division. Her unbeaten run in the Singles came to an abrupt halt when she was again ousted by arch-rival Madison Bourguignon. In the semi-final clash, the St Joseph’s Convent, Port-of-Spain, student won the opening set 6-3. However, the number three seed could not capitalise on her first set advantage and was beaten 6-1, 6-2 in the following sets by the division’s top seed.

The other semi-final match saw fourth seed Korean Jeung Won Yang defeat second ranked Alexandra Bourguignon (US) 6-0, 7-5.

In Stampfli’s quarter-final encounter yesterday, she powered into the “semis” with a comfortable straight set win over Nancy Menjivar of El Salvador.
