Costelloe claims Mountain Bike menís open title

TEAM Beaconís, Jason Costelloe pedalled to victory in the Menís Open and Veteranís 40+ Cross Country Three-lap Mountain Bike race at the inaugural Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation-hosted National Mountain Bike Championships, which was held at the Arboretum, Chaguaramas, on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Costelloe finished in a golden time of 48:19.6. Mikeís Bikes rider, Rishi Ramlalack clocked the same time but received silver due to split- second lap-durations. Subway Slipstreamís Rudy Ashton bagged bronze in a time of 49:32.9 while Brent Edmund (Team Xterra) came in fourth (50:56.5) and Rainbow Warriorsí Jason Gooding (53:04.3) claimed fifth spot respectively.

Receiving top honours in the Veteranís 40+ division of the race was Ryan Abraham (Northern Rangers MTB), who also finished seventh overall. Club-mate, Christian Hospedales grabbed silver in the 40+, with a ninth place overall finish. Mikeís Bikes owner, Michael Phillips had to settle for third in this division and take 11th place overall.

Ramlalack then made well his second attempt and powered to gold in the Time Trial Open. His time was 13:19. The Mikeís Bikes rider finished ahead of eventual runner-up Ashton (13:31) and Costelloe (14:21) respectively.

Claiming their respective Time Trial titles were Subway Slipstreamís David Hackshaw (Menís 50+); Hospedales (Menís 40+); Peter Sellier (Tinymites); Maria Gooding (Female Open) and Jonathan Sellier (Male Juvenile).

Winning the Open two-lap MTB race was David Hackshaw, in a golden time of 34:18.2. Sellier (P) took silver in 38:32.9 while Gooding (M) settled for bronze (38.39.5).

This was the local federationís first-ever MTB sanctioned event. After the successes of the inaugural meet, the TTCF is expected to host the event on an annual basis. Sponsoring this yearís MTB Championships was Dimes, Chaguaramas Development Authority, Geronimoís, National Lottery Control Board, Hyundai, Blue Waters, Yoplait, Kiss Hearty Balance, Gatorade, Mikeís Bikes and the TTCF.
