Murray salutes new WICB head

By JOEL BAILEY Sunday, March 31 2013

DERYCK MURRAY has extended his best wishes towards newly elected president of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron of Jamaica and his deputy, Emmanuel Nathan of Dominica.

The pair of Cameron and Nathan defeated the incumbent Dr Julian Hunte of St Lucia and his running mate, former Barbados and West Indies fast bowling great Joel Garner during the Board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Barbados on Wednesday.

In a brief interview on Thursday, Murray, the ex-Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies wicket-keeper/batsman said, “I wish the new executive all the very best, for their term of office.

“I think they have a great responsibility to West Indies cricket and we all want to see West Indies cricket improve,” continued the former Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president. “So we want them to do well in that role and to help West Indies cricket to go forward.”

Among the many pitfalls during Hunte’s six-year stint as WICB president has been the decreasing amount of sponsors for the regional game, with the three major competitions —Regional Four-Day, Regional Super50 and Caribbean T20 —having no major financial backer, while Digicel has also reportedly ended its spell as sponsors for the West Indies team.

Asked if sponsors be willing to come back on board, Murray cautiously replied, “we’ll have to see how that works (out).

“I suppose they would look to see what this new executive does, before they commit to anything,” he added. “So it’s an interesting stage for West Indies cricket and we have to hope that it’s for the betterment of the West Indies.”
