NATIONAL player Channon “The Cannon” Thompson and Dominican Republic’s Elvis Contreras were voted the Most Valuable Players (MVP) in the Women’s and Men’s division of the Second Edition of the Caribbean Volleyball League which ended at the UWI-SPEC facility on Sunday night.
This was Thompson’s second MVP award in two weeks after leading the Calypso Spikers to gold in the NORCECA Second Round Group I Qualifiers for the 2014 FIVB World Championships set for Italy.
The former Poland-based professional helped the University of TT (UTT) retain their title as they pulled off another miraculous five set win over Glamorgan who were touted as favourites after they defeated the 2012 champions in their final preliminary match in four sets.
The 19-year-old who had a solid tournament, had another big game in the final with 20 points, 19 of which came from kills. As a result of helping her team to the title, her performance over shadowed American Kim Tucker- Willoughby who was the leading candidate for the award heading into the final.
Tucker-Willoughby helped the 2012 runners-up play unbeaten up to the final match with some heavy performances. At the end of the tournament she walked away with the Best Spiker, Best Server, Best Receiver and Best Scorer awards. UTT and national players Sinead Jack copped the Best Blocker award while Courtnee-Mae Clifford was the Best Libero.
