TRINIDAD and Tobago’s George Bovell III picked up his third bronze medal of the 2013 FINA World Cup yesterday with a gutsy performance in the Men’s 100m Individual Medley (IM) in Dubai.

The former Olympic 200m IM bronze medallist stopped the clock at 52.38 seconds to pick up 907 FINA points. Australian Kenneth To won the gold in an impressive 51.64 seconds while Russian Vladimir Morozov touched the wall second in 51.76 seconds.

Bovell had earlier advanced to the final with the fourth fastest qualifying time of 54.74 with Morozov clocking 53.81 to advance with the quickest time.

The Trinidadian swimmer will be back in the pool today in search of more medals in heat seven of the Men’s 50m freestyle.

Bovell has gold in the 100m medley in the first leg of the World Cup in Eindhoven while his previous three bronze medals were earned in Berlin (100m IM) and Moscow (50m freestyle and 100m IM).

After his race yesterday, Bovell expressed contentment with his performance but sees room for improvement.

“Half a second faster than Moscow. Bronze tonight. Getting sharper.

“Butterfly felt like a bulldozer though...Too much training all alone has me a little rusty, now working into things, sharpening up and catching the flow again,” he tweeted.

The World Championships bronze medallist also thanked his local fans who were in the crowd cheering him on as he went for glory.

“Trinis in the stands tonight in Dubai! Thanks for the support and energy. Came looking for you all after with my flowers, was too late.”
