North Zone title to be decided today

Wednesday, October 23 2013

THE NORTH Zone title in the BGTT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Championship Division will be decided today as the final scheduled day of action in the Division takes place.

Three teams are still with a chance of claiming the crown — St Mary’s, Mucurapo and 2012 title-holders St Anthony’s.

St Mary’s and Mucurapo both have 26 points from 11 games, while St Anthony’s have 25 points.

St Mary’s only need a win against last-placed Malick, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, to secure the crown. But, if St Mary’s drop points, then the winner of the Mucurapo-St Anthony’s contest (carded for the St Anthony’s Ground), will take home the title.

Fourth-placed Fatima will be hosting fifth-placed Diego Martin in the other North Zone contest.

The South Zone can also be decided today, depending on the results in games featuring leaders and 2012 winners Presentation San Fernando and second-placed Naparima.

Presentation have 23 points from ten games while Naparima, who will be playing their final league game today, have 21 points.

If Naparima drop points away to Mayaro, then Presentation will retain their crown, regardless of their result away to Princes Town. Presentation have a game outstanding, against Shiva Boys.

Today’s other South Zone meeting will feature St Benedict’s against last-placed Pleasantville at La Romaine.

Tobago Zone leaders Speyside, who were set to meet Roxborough in a rescheduled contest on Monday, will be in action today against second- placed Mason Hall while dethroned champions Scar-

borough will be opposing table-proppers Goodwood at Shaw Park.

Pentecostal Light and Life will meet Roxborough at the Signal Hill Ground while Bishop’s High will tackle Signal Hill at the Mt Pleasant Ground.

East Zone winners St Augustine are on a bye today, with the other six teams battling for positions on the final standings.

Second-placed El Dorado West will be hosting neighbours El Dorado East, third-placed Trinity East will be visiting dethroned champs Arima while Valencia will be meeting San Juan at the Arima Municipal Stadium.

In related news, there were no word as to whether or not rescheduled matches will take place in the Central Zone today. All games will get going at 3.45 pm.
