St Augustine Secondary reigned supreme at the 2013 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Prize Distribution Ceremony yesterday, as they copped the lion’s share of awards at the Miracle Ministries Pentecostal High School in McBean, Couva.

Altogether, the “Green Machine” raked in a mammoth haul of 16 awards, which were also inclusive of the League’s highest male and female individual accolades. Hoisting this year’s coveted crown for the Most Outstanding Male Player was St Augustine favourite, Ricardo John, while female schoolmate Nyomi Guerra, bagged the women’s equivalent. Both athletes played instrumental roles in affirming dominance of the 2013 season for their school and were duly rewarded for their many hours of hard work, training and precise execution on the field of play.

After a hectic campaign in this year’s edition of the annual league, the St Augustine boys were officially awarded with their Coca Cola National Intercol title while the young women relished in the lifting of the BGTT Girls Intercol crown.

As students and representatives of the green and white uniformed school constantly made their way up to the stage to collect their prizes, the overly hyped St Augustine supporters continued to roar in delight. The “Green Machine” was also in winner’s row for two national titles - the Under-14 Boys and Under-15. They went on to pick up awards for the Form One and Under-14 Division East Zone Leagues, Under-15 Girls East Zone Knockout and League, Under-16 East Zone League and both the Championship Division Girls and Boys Zonal Knockout and League titles. St Augustine then capped off an illustrious year of football by receiving the Girls Big Five First Citizens Bank trophy.

Finishing distantly behind this season’s trophy leaders were Carapichaima East and hosts Miracle Ministries Pentecostal, who both bagged four. Arima North and Chaguanas North were tied at three-a- piece. Both Central teams were even crowned joint winners of the Under-16 Boys’ Junior Division

Attending yesterday’s event and proudly delivering some of the presentations were SSFL president Anthony Creed and several of the League’s board members, sponsor representatives Milton Siboo (SporTT), Janelle Holloway (First Citizens Bank), Russel Callender (Coca Cola), BGTT’s Communications and Brand Manager Wendell Constantine.

Delivering an inspiring feature address was attorney at law, Christophe Brathwaite. During his 20-minute pep-talk, Brathwaite called on the young national players to instil discipline into their game-play to ensure a high level of professionalism, both on and off the field.

SSFL president Creed, had some bittersweet remarks pointed in the direction of the local media, who according to him, challenged the League’s decisions at one specific crucial stage of this year’s competition - the controversial Big 5 final featuring St Mary’s College and Presentation College San Fernando.
