Clarke Road get lion’s shareBy KERN RAMLOCHAN Tuesday, July 3 2007
FIRST Citizens Clarke Road collected the lion’s share of awards at the Eastern Credit Union National Cricket League’s Presentation Function which was held at the Eastern Credit Union, La Joya on Sunday.
Clarke Road won the league competition, edging out Queen’s Park by two points on the final day of the season.
Trinidad and Tobago and Clarke Road batsman Gregory Mahabir was the top run-getter in the Eastern Credit Union National League scoring 398. He also hit two centuries — 124 against Ceramic Merry Boys and 115 against PowerGen.
Former West Indies all-rounder Neil McGarrell who plays for Ceramic MerryBoys was named the Eastern Credit Union “Player-of-the-Year” after an outstanding season.
The Guyanese national batted for nine innings and was not out on three occasions scoring a total of 329 runs with a highest score of 117 not out versus Aranjuez Sports. He ended with an average of 54.83.
He bowled 143.1 overs with 45 maidens and conceded 332 runs taking 37 wickets to finish as the top bowler in the league. During the season he captured one ten-wicket haul against CLICO Preysal and was named “Player of the Round” once for his outstanding performance.
Mc Garrell won the “Player-of-the-Year” award from a competitive field which included Capil Harry of Monroe Road, Nicholas Ramjass of W Connection Wanderers, Lendl Simmons of Ceramic Merry Boys and Samuel Badree of PowerGen who were all named alongside Mc Garrell as the “Five Cricketers of the Year.”
President of Eastern Credit Union, Ronald Bobb said that the company jumped at the opportunity to sponsor the league and saw it as an ideal avenue to give back to the community. He explained that Eastern Credit Union believed in the development of Trinidad and Tobago’s society through sports.
Bobb said he was happy with the alliance the Eastern Credit Union has formed with the TTCB and hopes the various youth programmes instituted continue to bear more fruit and wished to continue their successful collaboration with the TTCB and cricket.
President of the TTCB, Deryck Murray in his address thanked the Eastern Credit Union for allowing an amicable transition from previous sponsors Carib. He revealed that over the past two years Trinidad and Tobago have been able to achieve great success as the regional level winning the Carib Shield, Carib Cup while finishing as runners-up in the Stanford Twenty/20 tournament. “If we are going to settle as being the best in the West Indies we have already achieved our goal.
“However, I know this is not the yardstick by which cricketers measure their talent because they want to be the best in the world. Trinidad and Tobago is an integral part of West Indies cricket and bringing us back to where we once were,” said Murray.
